Scope of Collection

This collection includes oral histories related to the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt families. The oral history program began in 1947. William A. Plog, former Roosevelt groundskeeper, was the first interview, and additional Roosevelt and Vanderbilt employees soon followed. By 1951, over 1,440 minutes were recorded. With the acquisition of Val-Kill in the 1970s, interviews with employees, friends and associates of Mrs. Roosevelt were added. These important resources speak of the human interaction between the Roosevelts, the Vanderbilts, their employees, neighbors and friends.
