Historical Context

The Mountain Top Library was originally known as the Haines Falls Free Library and was founded in 1900. It is the mission of The Mountain Top Library to disseminate knowledge through the offering of information and communication services, literature, and history. We strive to facilitate and promote activities designed to expand and improve the quality of library services to our patrons; and to sponsor appropriate events, programs, and activities that will strengthen the library in the advancement of its stated purposes.

Though the library does not possess the majority of the mountain top’s archives, we house an eclectic mix of documents and images that span from the 17th Century to the late 20th Century, highlighting many significant features of the Catskill Region and its unique historical print.

Scope of Collection

This collection includes a variety of materials including historic postcards, genealogical records, and photographs related to the mountain top communities in the Catskill region, including locations such as Hunter, Widnham, Prattsville, and Twilight Park. The postcard collection includes hundreds of images from all the mountain top villages, as well the surrounding valley. Many date back as far as the early 20th century, and include unique, early views of the Catskills’ communities & landmarks, hotels & resorts, railroads & reservoirs, and iconic landscape. Our genealogical records focus primarily on the early families of the Mountain Top, many of which still have descendants who reside locally. Additionally, the collection contains many photographs, pamphlets, and albums that chronicle the evolution of enterprise within the mountain top communities.
