Historical Context

"The Trudeau Sanatorium, also known as the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium, was a tuberculosis sanitarium founded by Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau in 1885. Trudeau was diagnosed with tuberculosis shortly after completing his medical training at Columbia College. To treat his illness, he moved to the Adirondack region to rest and enjoy the fresh air. He subsequently recovered and was inspired to establish his own medical practice treating tuberculosis patients with the open-air treatment. The Trudeau Sanatorium closed in 1954 after antibiotic treatments were proven successful for curing tuberculosis.
Margaret Janvier Hort was a patient and librarian in the medical library at the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York. During her time at Trudeau Sanatorium, Hort photographed its facilities. people, and surrounding area."
