Historical Context

Long Island is an island located in New York State, between the New York Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the most populated, longest, and largest island in the United States. Long Island was a rural, agricultural area until the Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883, which connected Long Island to New York City. Before the Brooklyn Bridge, the only form of transportation Long Islanders had was along the waterways.

Scope of Collection

The Long Island Historic Postcard Collection consists of postcards of towns and villages in Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties of New York dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
