Historical Context

Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, NY opened in 1858 when Jamestown outgrew the original burial ground, which was located at the current site of the James Prendergast Library. Begun with 37.5 acres, the property has grown to over 150. There are more than 43,000 burial sites in the cemetery. Notable burials include Lucille Ball, Reuben Eaton Fenton (NY Congressman, Senator and Governor), Catherine Harris (local leader of the Underground Railroad) and James Prendergast (grandson of Jamestown’s founder).

Scope of Collection

The library partnered with the cemetery to digitize the information from the burial records from 1858 to 1950. The burial records include name, DOB (date of birth), age, COD (cause of death), death date, funeral and burial plot details. Information on military service, occupation, nationality, sex, race, church and social membership are also available.
Please note: There may be additional burials not listed due to inaccurate source records. Please call the cemetery to verify a burial if you are unable to find one you feel should be there.
